Wind Energy as Alternative Solution

As just happening on Japan that fail to maintain their nuclear energy from damage after tsunami disaster, people then look back to other energy resources like wind energy as alternative to generate power. Wind energy has long time used in Netherland as their electric source.

The American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) puts average size of turbines intalled in 2008 at 1.67 MW (megawatt). Meanwhile, the top end of rated capacity is 5 to 6 MW, intended for offshore sites. The most critical and costliest parts of wind power system are the turbine blades, which are protected. Blade pitch control regulates the amount of power and torque extracted from the wind by optionally orienting blades to the air flow, while yaw control keeps the nacelle pointing into the wind or out of the wind, if required.

One of the wind generator obstacle is the noise of this wind that produce by axle of turbine. Installed this equipment must withstand harsh ambient condition, on/off cycling due to high or low winds, and nacelle vibrations without undue maintenance. Optimal power generation requires control of individual blades, due to wind vibrations. Different wind and ambient condition can exist even between the top and bottom of the rotor’s swept area.
